What is the sociological term for the oppisite of mainstreaming in special education?

Hollis Demasters: ***Segregation***Various PWDs see Special Education classes as "Segregation".EDIT: To jd ma, I know where you are coming from because I am a parent of a only child who was born with Autism and Mental Retardation who is now an adult. My child was in Special Education classes all throughout their public school career. I am a PWD by birth. There are various PWDs that resent being put in Special Education classes for various reasons. I am giving a PWD insider's viewpoint on how various PWDs see Special Education classes....Show more

Malcom Fenoff: special edthats what it is really

Collin Barter: In my school district they have: Special Day Class (SDC) where the kids stay with the same teacher all day and in elementary it's usually a combo class of 1-3rd graders and 4th-6th graders. These kids usually have more than one learning disability, and have lower IQ's than other children their age. In Intermediate school and high school they spend the ma! jority of their day in the SDC class but go out for P.E. and elective classes. We also have SH classes where the students are severely disabled and stay in the same class all day and usually learn life skills. Then there is Resource. In elementary grades the students are usually pulled out of the gen. ed. class for small or individual work with a resource specialist or aide. In intermediate school and high school these "resource" kids have either resource classes in the areas they need help as well as their gen. ed classes or they attend gen. ed. classes with a resource aid to help them or with modified curriculum or modified grading. Resource students are students who have high ability but have some sort of learning disorder that hinders their ability and they need help to "catch up" or stay up with gen. ed. students....Show more

Ileen Oshell: If you are in a classroom with strictly special education students it's considered to be a "Self Contained," classroom. Ma! ny different ESE classrooms will have different names like VE ! (Vocational Education) or CBI (Community Based Instruction) but they are all considered self contained.

Esteban Lyson: PWD--Some people with disabilities cannot work at the same pace as typical developing people, therefore a SpEd class is in place. And before you berate me, PWD, I have a child in SpEd/inclusive classrooms, so don't even go there! As for your question, tedset20, the opposite of the mainstream is subculture.
