Ginny Trickett: Depending on the size of your side garden, get a pencil and paper and sketch up a simple design or floor plan of what you want to do. Maybe a walk way with a bird bath and a park bench and some plants. Then check with your local nursery or home depots and get some advise from them. Remember some plants grown tall and some short, some need lots of care and other are maintenance free. You are best planting what likes you soil and weather. Don't forget the possibility of a few tomato squash, green beans mixed in the the flowers. I keep flowers and herb in my veggie garden because they keep away the bugs, Marigold, parsley, basil etc. Get on line and you will find lots of helpful web site for doing gardens. I do above ground gardening and I don't have to worry about tilling the soil and working hard. Put down a frame, add some good cow manure soil and plant away.. I do compost for extra plant nutrition, and gets rid of our food waste, egg shells, peel! ings and such....Show more
Sol Allphin: I wonder if Vinnie could do the same for me as I am getting too old for that sort of thing and Penny said she was going or has planted her tomatoes.
Jade Ohno: the best answer is to start small with a raised garden, you make your own soil and don't have to till ever, go to your local nursery where they have knowledgeable people and ask them them what grows well in your part of the state...plant maybe 4 types of plants and enjoy the experience...next year you can expand on your enjoyment...
